I ripped out an old cupboard to turn it into an alcove for a fridge. I need to remove a small section of what looks like horse hair lathe and plaster (see photo).

As the house is 100 years old, and I don't know if this is original, should I be concerned about any dangerous materials or should i just wear a mask and gloves and shift it?

Asbestos or anthrax (don't laugh, I was warned by an old guy)

There shouldn't be an asbestos risk from lath and plaster.
The anthrax risk is so low as to be negligible.
However, getting any sort of dust into your lungs isn't a great idea - get yourself a comfortable FFP3 face mask, overalls and goggles, then shift it.

Thanks RandomGrinch!

It will most likely be a lime plaster with horsehair added for strength, so just an alkaline dust, it will all be chalk by now.
