Hi All,

I've had a few big 900mm ex council slabs ( Very heavy ) gave me and i want to lay them down my ally-way in between my house and a neighbors house.

' Advice needed '

- After i hack out all the old concrete out down the ally-way.. What do i have to use to lay the slabs on ?

- Do i need to hire a wacker plate for the ground after the old concrete is pulled up?

- Do i lay membrane down the ally-way before laying the slabs?

- What material and method is the best way to lay the slabs guys so the job is right for many years

I've uploaded some photos for you to have a idea in helping me..

Hope you guys can help.. Thanks

^^^^^Its a wickes worrier^^^^^^^
Right best off starting as you mean to go on.

check to see if the ground is 110mm/150mm cant remember below the DPC
gun out old concrete check for pipe cables ect
then dig out 50mm base work 40mm/50mm bed then whatever the thickness of the slab say 30mm whatever =120mm/130mm whatever....

I tend to rake level the ground then whack that (just my thing)
then lay your geotex (ground sheet)
level out M.O.T TYPE 1 stone or crush take in that you loose about 10% when you whack it now is the time to start setting out falls away from house ect if you can if not then install a aco drain.
You should.
Now have a clean tidy stoned LEVEL base.. with falls ect or set in your ACo drain now on a 4/1 sharp sand mix (lean mix)@ finish height....
so all base work is set out ect start of by dry bonding if needed to see the lay out cuts ct you dont have to do it..
you want 5/1 sharp sand mix (lean) little wetter then a screed mix lay your gear out just thicker then needed i use a brickys trowel after ****ing it about with a shovel..
Make waves in your gear so it spreads out when you bump the slab in....
WET the back of the slab (bucket of water an hand brush or hose pipe) then set your slab in lightly then tap down with mallet (white rubber) or but of club hammer. working the slab l;evel to a string line or just off a level ect
if your pointing up leave this till next day 10mm joints or just but them up.....
try lifting a slab when you laying them to see if your getting 90%/100% coverage under it and tweak the bed as you go

Ps i hate slabbing its a bitch an when you cut them Use a stihl saw an wet cut too much better
