thankyou i seem to often be buying butt taps , if i accidentally move the part of the tap that goes into the butt it starts leaking so was trying to find a alternative to the problem, not sure if washer would work on fitting on hose because my ones seem to leak out of the middle of connector and i dont think the connector comes apart. but thankyou maybe i should resign myself to constantly replacing. annoying though.

Worth a couple of pictures to see the type of connector.

Is your tap screwed into a thread on the butt or through a hole with a backnut?

tap is through a hole with a plastic nut it may have come lose, will have to get someone to check as i am only 5ft tall. the connectors on image insert can move up and down. dont know why i always have problems with my 2 water butts. wondered weather i could use tape or a sealant? keep replacing them but within weeks have same probs

The O rings on those connectors perish. You can buy replacement O rings made for the job on ebay.

There should be a soft rubber seal between the flange of the tap and the hole it fits into in the butt - Outside the butt, rather than inside. You can tighten the plastic nut by first emptying the butt, laying it on the ground, then reaching inside with a pair of adjustable water pump pliers - you may need someone to hold the tap still, whilst you tighten the nut inside.
