Hello,

I am changing the light fixture in my house and cannot seem to get this to work. The original ceiling pendant was cracked and falling off.

This is the wiring right now.

I have purchased a standard ceiling rose pendant.

did you take a photo before removing ?

one will likely be live and neutral IN
and the other to the switch - both Live and switched Live - so takes the LIVE down to the switch and then the other connection at the switch brings back the live to the rose

do you have a multimeter - OR some way to measure the voltage

one of the blacks maybe a neutral
and the 2 reds and black - may (depending on switch) Live

Rookie mistake, didn’t take a picture!

yes I have a multi meter, it’s 2 red 2 black and 2 copper

copper are earths and should be sleeved

so i pair will probably be live IN

so if you measure each cable - grey , red and black - i suspect one will read approx 240V and the other nothing
remember this stuff can KILL
so assume a) you have a reasonable idea what you are doing and b)you know how to use a multimeter

once you have done that and identified the LIVE IN cable
you could (with power OFF) checkk the switch cable
and then using resistance continuity - connect to the other black and red and switch the light switch ON/OFF and see if that has continuity ON off with the switch

BUT that assumes you know a little bit about what you are doing
And that I'm correct in my assumptions

how is this protected is it on a MCB and RCB at the consumer unit????

I’m ok when it’s the updated wiring and that, I have a fair idea of the basics and have don’t this many many time before. This old house I’m in now, nothing seems to be a simple fix.

I have measure with the multimeter and identified each

see ericmark reply
missed the obvious myself dah!!!

should be - from old to new colours - but electric does not know colours - so this is assuming people wire correclty
red=brown
black=blue
copper = yelloe/green sleeving

if
black is a switch should have a red sleeve
Blue is a switch should have a brown sleeve

not trade , but worked on quite a few houses and rarely saw , black with a red sleeve
