I've fitted lights before but always using a metal box for the switch. I now want to use a plastic surface pattress but I'm not sure where to connect the earth as there is not earth on the pattress or on the switch. If I use twin & earth (as for the light) when I come to wire up the switch, do I just ignore the earth - the equivalent of using 2 core cable I guess.

When using plastic back boxes (for stud walls) for nylon lighting switches, there isn't anywhere to earth to, so I tend to leave the earth wire long enough to reach anywhere in the box (in case someone fits a metal fronted switch in the future), cover it with g/y sleeving and bend the wire into the back box (making sure the sleeving can't fall off).
