Hi,

Wondering if you can help a newbie. I've replaced lights in the past but the new light fitting has always been prewired so you match up to the ceiling wires. I've bought a new light for my soon to be born baby's room but the fitting has no wires already in it and I have no idea which wire will go where.

Please help! I know it doesn't need an earth (but what do I do with the wire from the ceiling?) but not sure which goes where!

If you are having trouble with the instructions, I would suggest you speak to the people who sold you the light fitting in the first place.
It does look like a clip in ceiling rose - though the edison bulb holder would mean you need to get the line and neutral the right way around - line to the centre pin and neutral to the outside pin.

You don't say what light fitting was there before and therefore we have no idea what cables are in the void.

Looks like spring terminals. In theory you just poke the ends of the wires into the round holes next to the 'T' shaped slots, and the sprung terminal grips the end, and wedges so they don't pull out.

Each hole usually only accepts a single wire, so if you have a plethora of wires at the fitting, you may need some choc blocs and a choc box or similar to correctly terminate them all, and just extend the switched live and neutral wires to the fitting.

Observe the correct polarity of the connections - Live to the centre spring terminal, and Neutral to the side contact.

If you do need to release the wires after installation, pushing a small screwdriver into the 'T' slot usually releases the spring pressure.

...but there will no doubt be loop, line, neutral and earth to contend with if it's a ceiling rose replacement. Who is going to tell the light manufacturers that there is generally more than just L and N to connect up? :?

Basically, the two conductors that connected to the ceiling rose flex are to connect in as mentioned in the posts above. The other conductors will need terminating somewhere and for that more information is needed (or a picture of what you see when you look at the place where the light will fix.
