Lighting Help!!!

They are - I have connected the black (live) with the brown from ceiling rose (also did it with brown from ceiling rose in with reds) and then they are connected to the brown from the new light.

So I have light but can't switch it off?

The brown of the new light is the only thing that should be connected to the switched live.

That other brown cable you had was a permanent live off to somewhere else and goes with the other reds.

Promise faithfully now only live connected to new light brown and other brown from ceiling rose now connected with red and still can't switch it off!!!

Look at the 1st pic you posted. all the reds and brown were conected together. The black live was only connected to the live of the light. The N of the light was connected with all the Ns.

Forgive the dodgy photos:-

I have the (black) live in a connector which is connected to the brown from new light

I have the reds and 1 x brown from ceiling in 1 connector

I have the earths from both connected together and then the blue and blacks from the ceiling connected to the blue from the new light.

Can you confirm that your black (live) that's connected to your light (brown), is from the same grey sheathing as the red that will feed your switch? In other words remove only those two from the connectors (with power off) put your multimeter across the(se) black n red and play with the switch to get a reading/no reading.

Bit dark now so I'll assume you'll live with the light always on until daylight returns (Mid June 2013!! :D)

Thank you to everyone who replied and helped! Solved the problem it was the wall switch rather than the wiring. New switch in plac, lighting upstairs and down and can be turned on and off.

It's been a pig of a task but I am proud of me for perserving.... I am a woman who doesn't like being defeated!!!

Well. Well done Dippy.

You shouldn't belittle yourself by saying "I'm a woman" (guessed that from the nail varnish in the photos (these days, who knows??)).

But full marks for knowing your place :P.

(I jest!!).

Ha ha ha thanks so much!! Just a shame I *want* to change the upstairs light and the one in the toilet :-/

My best honest advice would be to do as you did this time. Grab some piccies before you touch anything!

G'luck!! (and be safe).
