I have noticed that the heat exchanger become blocked on a yearly basis resulting in cycling of the hot water. Needless to say, a shower is impossible under such circumstances. And these heat exchangers are £70 a go!

I did hear of someone who actually installed a renewable filter in the return pipe and he hadn't changed one for many years as a result. Does anyone know of a filter they can recommend so i can do this? I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Thanks in advance - Phil.

as has been said many times on the forum, replacing a blocked h/e will rarely solve the problem. you need to clean your system

Whoever owned the property before cleeaned the system using Fernox and i believe that is what actually caused the problem. You could actually see the exchanger was full of it. I do flush the system but if you have any recommendations as to a good cleaner which doesn't clog up the exchanger, i'd appreciate the advice.

IF you add a cleaner make sure that you run plenty of hot baths to ensure cleaning of the H/e !!

I find "Kamco Hyperflush" works very well!!

Obviously who ever lived there previously did not clean and inhibit the system as you are experiencing these problems !!

Despite what you may read on this forum to the contrary, it is quite effective to remove and clean the existing H/e !!

I suspect that some cannot be ar#ed to spend 15 mins with a hose pipe or (my preference) jet washer !!

Chances are your problem is limescale amongst other things. I am not aware of any of the shelf products that will actually solve this. You could try specialist acids, but would not recommend that unless you know exactly what you are doing as it can kill your boiler. Leaves a powerflush

You need to be aware that whatever you think you are doing by adding chemicals its no guaranty that it really been cleaned very well.

Merely repeating that the previous owner cleaned the system is obviously not the case otherwise you would not be having these continuing problems.

A power flush using the correct chemicals is the best solution, any lesser treatment will have variable results.

A gauze filter on the return would be a good idea if you are not prepared to have the system cleaned effectively.

Really? Won’t that just clog up the filter, leaving the circulation to die a slow death?
Not questioning your expertise, just can’t see how that works unless it is like a magna clean where the user can easily clean it when needed

Yes, of course it will clog up!

But the owner will be able to clean it out easily himself in a few minutes.

At £5 to buy it its far cheaper than a Magnaclean AND it traps ALL the dirt in the system not just magnetic bits.

bly me, good thing most people do not know about this, would cost me a lot of business :D

All of your replies made very interesting reading, expecially Tony, who suggested the gauze filter. Where do i get one of these from and is there a particular name for it? It could save me a lot of hassle and definately seemed the way to go. After all, engines have filters for that very purpose. The filter, coupled with regular flushing, should keep the system in good condition.

All noted on running the bath to clear out any chemicals used! All of your suggestions are more than welcome, so keep them coming!

Regards,

Phil

no. one PROPER flush followed by inhibitor being kept at sufficient level will keep your system clean for a generation.

half hearted botch jobs keep needing to be repeated
