400mm is correct Diddybear, but 16 foot is a decent span, and if it was mine i would definetly want 9x2 in there, infact you are hard pushed to get bigger then 18 foot 9x2 and they would be only just big enough for there, so you are on one of the larger spans that you would come across

should really be 3" thick timber for such a wide span and the other thing to watch is the support at the eaves most times building control wont just let you chamfer off the joists and sit them on the wall plate as in effect you will be reduceing the timber down to about 3" at the ends and in effect thats not much more than you already have, usual method is to use steels supported on the side walls and to hang the floor joists from these.
