I recently downloaded all the lotto history results and put them in a spreadsheet. (as you do). I thought I would have a play with the figures and started by averaging all the results by column. The results were in the order they were drawn, so basically I added up all the first drawn balls and divided by the total number and so on.

Ok, to get to the point, the result of all six columns was 25. Now I find that slightly strange, or is it? It's bugging me now, so is there anyone out there sad enough to make a comment. And I thought the answer to everything was 42!

Hmm, i'm having a blonde day. If you add all the numbers from 1-50 and divide by 50 you get 25. The lotto column contains the numbers from 1 - 50 many times over so the answer is the same. Still a bit strange though !

The formula for finding the sum of sequential numbers is...

Where S is the sum of the numbers, n is the last number required.
S = (n x n+1)/2 .... So 1 to 50 adds up to 1275, divide by 50 gives you 25.5 not 25.

I think you have skewed your results somehow, the chances of all 6 columns averaging exactly 25, would be greater than winning the Lottery.

The averages for the six balls and bonus ball over about 1300 draws are ...

Ball1: 25.42133538
Ball2: 24.98388335
Ball3: 25.11665388
Ball4: 25.21258634
Ball5: 25.47198772
Ball6: 25.32847276
BB: 24.96838859

Not sure what you mean what you have said here Trazor as the more draws there are the closer the mean gets to the median so the above isn't unexpected?

You are right, the more draws their are, the closer to 25 you will get.

But as your figures to 8 places show, the chance of them ALL being exactly
25.00000000 is very remote.

I doubt Wolfboys were exactly 25 ... Bit of rounding going on methinks ;)
