The following image is taken from under my kitchen sink

The cold water pipe was temporarily switched off as I was awaiting a washing machine..

However when I came to connect up the washing machine, the circled was loose.

And I want clarification on how to nip this up and which way should I turn?

I am a bit worried that if I cock this up, residual water will shoot out everywhere (even though water supply is switched off)

To ensure a leak free joint, should I use anything e.g. ptfe?

Righty tighty (clockwise) ... lefty loosey ...... as you look at it from the top down.

No tape needed.

Yes, but that is what i was a bit confused about.. I know that you go clockwise to tighten.. However, in this case ia top town from the gold end cap?

If so, am i right in saying that I'd tighten the circled by turning left?

No not the nut that you have circled dont touch that, remove the larger brass cap by turning anti clockwise then attach the hose and tighten the plastic nut when tight turn the blue handle on the valve until it is line with the valve and you are done

the pipe goes into a pushfit tee and it is thats what's rotating, hold the valve with pump pliers, remove the brass nut then connect your washing machine hose.

I'm confused.. Can you explain why i shouldn't touch the silver part? It moves about easily when touched by hand

This gives me the impression that water will start leaking around that area when i turn on the water supply..

Yes, i will remove the brass end cap and connect the washing machine.. Thanks for the help

Oh i take it that the push fit fitting is meant to rotate (have some play) as it is?

So this is all normal?

Looks like it is normal..

Got it all connected up and no leaks..

Thanks for the help guys

You need to drill a hole through the unit base and bring the hose up to meet the isolating valve...you're asking for trouble trying to connect the hose as it is...chafing on the hole, under strain bending round to the valve etc.

Images below of how things look presently

Where do I need to drill exacty? Can leaks occur from the kink in the washing machine hose?
