The boiler is a maxol morocco. The first time this problem happened I had a gas plumber out to fix it, he changed the thermocouple which fixed the problem with the pilot light, but said he has not heard of banging coming from pipes. Three weeks later the banging happened again when the central heating was on, the banging stopped after about 10 seconds and the pilot light went out and will light but not stay lit, can anybody please help?

Your overheat stat has tripped out to protect the boiler the loud banging is the boiler getting far too hot and the heat is unable to get away quick enough. Could be your pump not working or breaking down and stopping when under load. Boiler stat not turning off or on way out and turning off at a far higher temp than it should, faulty pump over run stat not kicking in when boiler turns off. Maxols usually have a self resetting over heat but may have a push button reset (instruction manual will tell you) .If it a self setting you know need a new stat as well as original banging prob sorted

Could the banging noise possible be due to the ACTUATOR in the airing cupboard, every now and then it makes a very loud humming noise and even when the heating system is turned off the noise is still there and does not stop.

doubt it caus if faulty actuator head was keeping boiler on boiler stat would act as normal and cut boiler off at correct temp whilst pump circulated water round by pass circuit.
