Hi, I'm at work and am unsure what boiler I have but it's an old one and wall hung. When I turn on the central heating the pilot light fires up but after a couple of seconds the pipes above the boiler start to bang and the flame goes down. The pilot light will then fire up again and the pipes bang and the flame goes down. I have had no heating for the past three months, luckily I still have hot water from the emersion heater. We have been trying to save up for a new boiler but not getting very far so am looking for hints/tips into fixing this problem. :(

Thanks, Michelle.

I suspect a circulation problem.

The noise in the pipes is the water boiling.

Possible causes (in approximate order)

Pump
Dry system (No water in Header tank or blocked cold feed pipe)
Blocked heat exchanger
Badly sludged system

I would check the pump first, sounds like it is stuck. I take it you mean the main burner lighting up, if your pilot caused this I think you have serious problems and ought to donate your boiler to NASA

Michelle, unless you are going to do a five year plumbing and gas course I suggest you call someone to help you out.

This could be a professional or as it will be a simple problem a very competent DIYer. Its not the boiler but the pump or a dry system.

But you certainly do need someone to sort it out.
