i have purchased a plot where the mains water has been installed underground to the side of the road(blue alkathene 22 mm).As this was installed by previous owner a few years ago will i have to uncover the trench all the way back to roadside 20mts before water co will make connection. Thanks for any help Dave.

I would not think so. Any pipe on your side of the Water Authority stop cock or meter is your problem, not theirs. If it leaks you get a big bill.

As Maltaron says. You shouldn't have to uncover the pipe. As long as you know where the pipe goes to and your end has a stopcock on it, the water co should be able to connect to the mains at their end.
