Makerfield doubts

I cannot understand why anybody would still vote Labour given what has happened in the last 30 years.

And I cannot understand why anybody would vote for a right-wing party given the history of what has happened when they've won power.

The people of Makerfield have voted for their own replacement. Maybe they never go outside of Makerfield so don't know what is happening in nearby Manchester and Lancashire. There are relatively few ethnic minorities and dole-drawers there (Makerfield) so who actually voted for Burnham? I suspect it is the mass media effect, screens were awash with Burnham propaganda, and the national campaign promoting him as the 'get Kier out' campaign. The good people of Makerfield have been conned into voting for another communist. No different from Starmer, just a bit younger.

Nor can I understand why anybody would believe that.

I watched Andy Burnham give his victory speech in a field and all he said was how politics needs changing as it doesn't work. Then as soon as any questions from the press were raised he was whisked off by some second rate bouncer with him thinking he is some A rater celebrity, it is pathetic to see and I don't like what Starmer stands for but would rather have Starmer than a slippery career politician looking out for himself. He will make no difference whatsoever and will destroy the labour party quicker than Starmer ever could. Labour is over and so are all of the other party's that are following the left viewpoint. Only Reform can bring the country something new. That is hope!!!!

There were 17 other elections held on Thursday, as well as Makerfield. Reform did the best in these, Makerfield being an anomaly due to the mass media promotion of Burnham. Reform / Restore are on track for power in 2029 if not sooner.

Third defeat in a row for Reform in "winnable" byelections.

The population in Makerfield hasn't been culturally enriched by immigration very much (yet). So they aren't yet seeing the effects of open-border policies.

We don't have any "open-border policies" for them to see the effects of.

But they didn't vote for Labour or Andy Burnham anyway, they voted to get rid of Starmer.

I struggle to believe that any of the Re-pulse voters would vote Labour to bring that about. Surely they'd relish the Anointed One, the King From Over The Water, losing to them as an even better way to bring about Starmer's demise? This was pretty much a fight of Labour v Re.

They couldn't get rid of the Labour govt for a few more years, but they had the opportunity to change the leader, for someone they hope is less terrible. They'll probably be disappointed.

And will you be disappointed if they aren't?

65% of voters looked at the reform offering and chose something else. Very wise.

Reform's vote share increased from the 2024 GE - in that 68% chose something else.

And if you add Reform & Restore together, only 59% rejected that type of offering, and support for it increased by 47%.

My amateur psephology says

  • Turnout increased because people were aware of the significance.
  • Labour's vote increased by the most, numerically, but Ref/Res had a bigger % increase (it seems reasonable in this case to look at their combined vote, as Restore was not an option in 2024, and they swim in the same swamp - I'm sure that most Restore votes were taken from Reform.
  • 1st & 2nd saw their votes increase, and we can see that it wasn't all down to the increased turnout.
  • I think there was significant "anyone but Reform" voting by erstwhile Lib Dems & Greens (and possibly some Tories - some of the old school ones, whilst they disagree with Labour on many things, are truly appalled by the racism and MAGA-style smash-and-burn of the Re- parties.)

There's Bob Hope, and No Hope.

And Farage is the epitome of a slippery career politician looking out for himself.

Maybe, but he does bring hope, his party is yet to let us down and from that point we can conclude that as of yet, they haven't.
