I found a few of these bugs in the attic there looks like some wood damage.

There are signs of some is historic ingress but there's no sign of wet timbers now, just staining so it's not a leak .... this attic space is however over the bathroom and may possible hold moisture due to storing some of the usual attic fodder in the area ...

Any thoughts on what they are what to do about them ?

You're not in Surrey, then?

Show us the wood damage.

Include a 50p coin in every photo to show scale.

Forgot the coin ...... But these are 3 inch rafters

The second photo I believe has been like that for a couple of years, the third photo is possibly new damage ?

Warm damp air working its way through your ceiling and condensing under the roof and running down the rafters.

So I assume ventilating the space further will just make it worse ? Its over the bathroom so I guess thats the problem

I have had an extractor fitted last year but its an old house so there's no vapour barrier
