Max Height of a Free Standing Block on Flat Concrete Pillar

Hi

We have concrete block wall in our garden built using 440mm x 215mm x 100mm laid block on flat. It stops 4 blocks above the current ground level.

We want to build some freestanding block on flat pillars directly off this wall. Max height ( excluding mortar ) of the pliiars would be 12 blocks on flat.

Between the pillars we plan to fit lightweight timber panelling.

The existing wall is about 26m long.

The area is relatively sheltered from the wind.

Is building a pillar in this way acceptable ?

What blocks are you using?

Solid dense concrete 7n fellas?

Will each pillar size be a complete block, i.e. 440 x 215?

Yes we are using 440mm x 215mm x 100mm solid dense 7N concrete blocks with a standard cement / sand mortar.

Yes the pillars are to be built using complete blocks laid flat on top of each other up to a maximum of 12 blocks high plus mortar beds.

I take it that it will be okay to buidl the pillars this way ?

We plan to fit lightwight garden fence type timber panelling in between the pillars.

The weight of the panels is largely irrelevant but their resistance to wind is.

Belt and braces approach would see you build 450 x 450mm columns between panels but i would be reasonably confident with a straight stack of solid dense concrete fellas laid flat.

A bit ugly though.
