Maybe a stupid question...

I have gas central heating and a battery powered wall timer/thermostat. I'm not sure how to set the timings on the thermostat - it's basically set so that the heating is on 24 hours according to that, but we just turn our radiators on or off at the valve as needed.

Would this effect our heating bills, or is the heating/boiler only in use when we have the radiator valves open and in use?

You will probably be spending about 20% too much on your heating if you use it like that!

But perhaps heating is cheaper in Austria?

Yeah, I only recently discovered it was set like this - first cold weather in this particular flat. I figured as much. Thanks.
