MDF bath panel

I have a MDF bath panel that appears to fit under the lip of my bath (so far, so good). However, I will need to 'trim it' around the bath supports leaving it around 2-3mm thick. The panel is about 12mm normally.

Will this leave it strong enough??

Now you’ve caught my attention; I saw that thread but didn’t look thinking there must be a radical explanation; but maybe not!
 
There's that green stuff people use for bath panel that's supposedly waterproof and looks a bit like mdf. Personally I think it's rubbish.
