mechanical protection

What is classed as mechanical protection when running in cables. And is conduit suitable for protecting cables run underground? I have a difference of opinion between me and another sparks at work.

An earthed metallic conduit may be used to protect cable undergroud.

Although in reality it is never used as it is very labour intensive to install, whereas SWA is fine for direct burial, and more often than not, the method of choice.

PVC conduit is NOT suitable.
