This is for the lighting specialists out there. Is there an alternative(lower power usage) lamp unit. I have an enquiry from a customer who has a number of 400w mercury lamps and wants to try to reduce his power consumption.

MBF use a similar setup to SONs and MH hence, without replacing the control gear the simple answer is no.
Replacing the luminaries with LED flavoured ones might be an option but come at a price!

Dont know statistics but i think you would get more light output from a lower wattage metal halide fitting rather than a 400 watt mercury fitting.

An alternative is change the ballast to a 250 fit an ignitor and use 250 white son lamps.

Dont be tempted to direct fit metal halide lamps, for one they need ignitors and two the fitting may not handle the higher temperature

you could try calling Abacus lighting they can advise you free of charge.
what they do with tescos car parks although there sons, is simply change the tappings on the ballast the lamps dimmer but it saves energy.

As spark 123 says Led is the best and most expensive way to go and you can now get retrofit kits to fit existing surface mounted and low and hi bay fittings

Ask your wholesaler to contact a couple of lighting sales geezers, they usually offer a site visit and design

At the moment i'm exploring the options. He dose'n't use them all the time and only when he has to.
