BUILDERS not plumbers (heating installers) install underground drainage.

i have not seen a plumber anywhere near a building site in years, when underground drainage is being installed.

this may be interpreted as a gripe, though it is merely stating a fact.

does a plumber (heating installer) know how to use a shovel?

I think you are in fact correct when it comes to any new build work or site work, but the one off jobs in the private sector are occasionaly carried out by the plumber.

I still think questions about underground pipework and drainage are better posted in the Plumbing forum as most plumbers will have been to college and studied all the regs etc.

In a flat where builders were redecorating, the replacement three floors of soil pipe was done by the same Polish people who were doing the painting!

The underground drainage was done by the bricklayer!

Its not derogatory to plumbers! Its just a statement of the current state of practice in the construction industry.

sorry, not a fact but a rarity.

as said previous, builders tend to fit all the drains whilst the digger is on site, and the area is a s**t hole.

it is a trend these days, for the 'cleaner trades', to only get involved once the roof is on and the windows fitted.

I am a boiler engineer and repair boilers!

Yet my speciality is within the general definition of plumbing and I did not read it as derogatory!

I know how to use a shovel but I dont do that kind of work. Its now within the scope of building labourers who are paid low rates to do manual work.

I will be using a shovel within the next few days as Sadie the dog is unfortunately dieing at the age of 14. Thats nearly 100 in equivalent human years but she has loved me dearly for the 10 years since I took her from the rescue home.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. It must be heartbreaking to know you're losing a dear friend. I dread when the time comes for my two. She has loved you dearly and I'm sure you have loved her too.

And I feel like I've caused a big stushie (as we'd say up here in Scotland) about who deals with drains!! I have to say, I'd have thought it was a builder - though is drainage not a specialist trade in itself? I know that when the plumber was fitting my shower, he had to put a new waste in and he was mightily miffed about having to dig a trench for it. In fact, as I was standing there in my stilletoes, skirt and dress coat, he told me he was need a trench dug from there to there. And he was telling me why? I think he was hoping I'd dig it for him. As it is, our waste is under a measly half inch of earth because he didn't want to dig - and this is no slight on any plumbers - this particular plumber was a pain - it took him 6 weeks to install a shower cubicle and shower and even then, the first time I used it, it blew the fuses because he'd not uprated the fuse in the fusebox for it.
