Anyone know of an "alternative" solution to moving a meter, other than by the supplier. Mines chopped into a wall, but sticks out proud so i have to build a cupboard round it.

Contacted EDF, but they want £700 and 8 weeks to move it 6 foot - robbing *******'s.

It looks like theres a switch between the meter and the incoming cable, and there's acres of room to get about under the floor as the house is on a hill, it seems like a simple job to move it, other than replacing the seals that would be broken, I cant see how EDF can charge so much, other than they seem to have a monopoly over the whole situation.

Unfortunately, there is nobody else who can move the meter except your DNO, seems to be EDF. So you either pay up or keep quiet.

And its not a simple job. These guys have to work live, on cables protected by large substation fuses. And this is non-essential work, their guys have better things to be doing, quite frankly. This is their view.

Do NOT even think about moving that meter and service fuse yourself.

By the way, its highly unusual to have a switch before the meter. You sure its not the service fuse?

it could be - its a very old looking black box, with one thick cable coming into it and two wires leading up to the CU and the meter.

Normal way its done is

1. incoming cable
2. service fuse
3. meter
4. isolator switch, if ness.
5. consumer units

A picture of what you've got would be nice. Not heard of it being recessed into a wall before
