Hi all

Went to see a new job today, bit of a dog's breakfast, see here

A new board is going in the under stair cupboard and the DNO are going to be asked to upgrade their tails and provide an isolator. It is approx 5m to the new board position and I'll need to provide additional protection for the customers tails. Question is what actually do I need to provide, I should probably know this but it's the first time I've actually had to consider it?

Thanks
Martin

Hi secure

I was thinking electrical protection what with the tails being over 3m

how did you get into my house with your camera?

Yes indeed, was what I had in mind, except I wondered considering the DNO will install an isolator, whether a switch fuse without a switch was an economic and practical option.

Fair comments, retired architect whose got a bit of a clue about electrics so it wasn't too difficult to persuade him. Considering a fair bit of the installation hasn't been touched in 70 years the leccy replacement piggy bank ought to be reasonably full.

OMG  What a mess lol!

Just a few points:
CU sideways. Three sets of tails directly into the meter, two of which are undersized, cant really tell with the tails feeding the main CU. No single point of isolation for the installation. Also seems to be some old VR cable being fed from the brown isolator to the left of the meter.

Finally where does the second set of tails from the 3-phase cut-out go to, they seem to disapear behind the CU. I'd hazard a guess that these go through to next door (assuming the house is a semi). If they do get the DNO to remove them asap as they look like they are about to fall apart and insist they provide next door with their own supply cable. I wouldn't want the supply for next door fed through my house and I'm sure not many other people would either.

All the best

Brown isolator feeds a socket in the airing cupboard into which the immerser is plugged as well as having a dbl skt spurred off. The VIR leaving the isolator becomes PVC T&E when it emerges upstairs, wouldn't care to guess what the joint is like. Tails into the main CU are probably undersized cos the cutouts are 100A. Needless to say its all going hence my earlier post, thanks for the advice chaps.

You're right about the second set of tails from the cutout, they do go next door, however I suspect the DNO aren't going to start laying lots of additional service cables, for no perceived benefit to themselves, we'll see what occurs.

I've also got another job which visually is actually worse than this.

Cheers
Martin
