Is it really important to have you microwave oven checked for leaks ?

I think it was standard procedure a few yrs ago.

Is it still a h/s requirement.?

Was it ever

I've worked in shops with microwaves in staff areas for several years, never seen a microwave inspector.

Though we do have a big safety sign, detailing do's and donts of microwaves.

Our microwave ovens in the canteen at work are checked periodically for leaks, as with any employer they have a duty to provide a safe place of work for their employees. As part of this they need to ensure that the appliances which are put into the place of work are safe and maintained in a safe condition.

but i believe it was recently removed as such, and been replaced with something a long the lines of a visual inspection for damage, checking operation of door mechanism and using the device in the manner for which it is intended.

Or this was certainly the situation in all canteen/tea bar areas within the armed forces, as it turns out we should have been a bit more worried about the high power air defence radars. Which come highly recommended if you want to ensure female offspring.

2. MICROWAVE OVENS
The incidence rate to date for injuries (such as thermal tissue
damage) arising at microwave ovens from exposure to microwave
radiation appears minimal. Lack of cleanliness and poor maintenance
of door seals can lead to leakage in excess of the recommended limit
of 5 mW/cm². Maintenance or service contracts with manufacturers
or suppliers are to be recommended.

Taken from HSE, although service/maintenance contracts are not something which is mandatory.

Not sure if it could be due to the nature of your workplace though? 8) I mean, the last thing they need is more radiation flying about the place!

Keep all seals clean.
To check if it is leaking place a bowl of water in, turn on full power.
Now you need a flourcent tube (small one)or neon, go round all the seals the tube or neon SHOULD NOT GLOW.
I spent many years in domestic appliance R&D.
