Miele washing machine draining as it fills

My mum has a Miele Novotronic Premiere Plus, purchased around 1997. Recently, it started to leak during cycles, but was still able to wash clothes. We pulled it out to have a look at the pump (where problems have arisen previously) and now it is leaking far worse.

Currently, as soon as we switch the machine on, water comes in the back, through the detergent drawer and straight out the pump filter flap (front bottom of machine). It is bypassing the drum.

Here are our observations:
- the pump rotates when the spin cycle is on
- the pump does not rotate when the machine is filling
- the drain pipe at the back is clear, and positioned higher than the pump
- if we blow into the drum inflow pipe we can expel some water from the pump filter flap
- if we pour water into the drum inflow pipe it comes out the pump filter flap (very little goes into the drum)
- the main drain pipe from the back of the machine looks intact
- the outflow pipe from the detergent drawer to the drum inflow pipe is not blocked

It seems like maybe we dislodged something as the problem got a lot worse after we moved it around and took the pump and pump filter out to have a look at them.

Any advice on what we can do to diagnose/fix this greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Katie

Thanks newboy - hadn't spotted the appliances forum. Have reposted there, post slightly modified as we have taken the front off the machine now and done some more inspecting. I guess trying to fix something and making it worse is more of a DIY normal experience than disaster!
