go to a branch of John Lewis (or similar big department store if you are not near one) and invest in a couple of large strong net laundry bags to put all the socks in before putting them in the machine. Not only stops the socks sneaking down the side of the drum but saves loads of time later as they are still all together and not spread around the rest of the washing.
