It seems to me that there's a pretty fundamental point that's being glossed over.

If he is claiming that he didn't say "pleb" then he is accusing police officers of falsifying evidence/statements, which is a serious allegation which needs investigating.

If his denial is a lie then he should be prosecuted or have resigned instantly anyway.

All of this is emphasising a potentially key point - what is admissable evidence? If (as Mitchell suggests) the police are lying then this needs investigating as a matter of some urgency
