Hi
I'm building some decking and think I'd be better off buying a power mitre saw.
I'm a bit confused about how wide a saw can cut. If it says it has a max cross cut of 140 then would I be able to cut a piece of 4x1 which is about 10cm wide at 45 degrees left and right? If I cut it at 45degrees then I reckon thats just over 140mm??? so will I need a sliding one?

Yes as you say its just over 140mm, if you can live with the saw leaving a little nib of uncut timber then just buy a mitre saw, i know it would eventually do my head in so if the budget allows then id say bite the bullet and get a slider, ent got to spend £600 on a dw712, i dont know your budget but 200 should get you decent one

My budget is up to £200. If I have to spend more for accurate cuts then I'll have to do it all by hand :(
I can't believe that so many saws on the market are just short of being able to mitre 4x1

simple solution buy your saw
plan carefully cut all the 45% together
with double sided sticky tape stick 12mm mdf or ply to the whole table area incliding supporting arms this will increase your cutting capacity by around 18mm but reduce the thickness by 12mm

dependant on the table size you may be able to just stick on the table to the side off the turn table but you must judge the safety off your individual table
