Maybe fine if you’re doing drama or some such course. A mate of mine did a bit of lecturing in a university once. He told me almost half in the business studies class were semi illiterate. They should spend more time in schools teaching the three R's before packing them off to uni.

Unfortunately yes, it always has been since tuition fees were charged. Universities are just trying to fill seats as foreign student numbers drop.

University is not a good route to getting a career job.
Employers don’t like University graduates because they have zero experience.

For many vocations some form of apprenticeship scheme with sponsorship to higher education is a better route.


We would be far better off expanding Further Education Technical colleges as there are many people who are very capable but not best suited to academic based education.

Slightly OT but related. The Scottish Conservative Party (yes they're still going up here!) have proposed a school leaving age of 14 for those for whom secondary school just isn't working and where an apprenticeship and/or college would be a better fit. I think 14 is a bit young, splitting hairs but I think 15 might be reasonable. Not just to leave school and do nothing, but in cases where school isn't working and another educational path has been identified that might be better for that individual child.

I could be completely wrong, but I sometimes think person A could get 62% in an exam, person B could get 92%, however person A would maybe be better in whatever field the exam relates to.
