Had some wood trim fitted to my fence

Used Rustins shed and fence clear over the top to protect. However, I can still see some mould growth.

Any advice on removing the mould? Sanding? Painting over the top?

Try sanding because the mould may have stained the wood.

You should have used an Anti-fungal wash before applying the stain.

OK - as Nige F says, sand of first, then apply a strong coat of anti-fungal, leave to dry and restain.

In outdoor timber, black mould will grow even under varnish, oils and stains.

you can bleach it out with oxalic acid. This is worthwhile for cabinetmakers, but not for fences.

I have some oiled hardwood where I have tried chemical wood preservers, but my best tactic was to use a dark wood dye after sanding so the dark mould patches don't show.

This is what I did

Coated with a clear wood preserver (Rustins)

Mould still appearing

I sanded it all down added two coats of wood preserver (Cuprinol)

Mould seems to be worse now after all the rain. Not sure if it’s just on the surface and the preserver is doing it’s job.

So have wiped down and added some dark paint to the wood now as there was no way of getting rid of the mould completely.
