I have been on this site for less than a day, and answered a question 5 hours ago which was a very straight forward enquiry regarding adding adouble socket to a RFC, it's still being discussed !!!!!!!!!!

Does it get better? ........... I expect John will answer

Depends.

It may be that you thought you had a straightforward question or answer, but other members believe it to be more complex than first considered.
A lot of people (not suggesting you're one of them) come on here with a shaggy dog story of the ilk "I've been told this is very difficult and I will need to pay £400 for a spark to do it, so I need you all to confirm that it's ok for me to use bell wire to link my 30A welder into a light socket in next door's shed", then they get all upset when people tell them that, no, they can't or should not be doing that.

Then there are threads where the question is answered but there then is some (I think, anyway!) interesting debate surrounding the topic so the discussion continues. The regulations, and even best practise, are not 100% prescriptive so it's often a chance for the professionals to debate pros and cons of different approaches. Remember that a number of the professional electricians on here may be self-employed so don't necessarily have colleagues to bounce ideas off.

And, of course, there are threads that descend into arguments and nit-picking. Every forum has these.

I like this, place, though. I learn something every day and even the tedious arguments are part of the fun.
Stick around - it's an acquired taste

Welcome to the forum. You expected correctly!

Your initial response to that OP was very brief and was, IMO, not really clear enough and potentially misleading. You told the OP that he could 'add a double socket as a spur', but qualified that by "as long as the FCU is not a spur from the ring", but you did not explore whether the OPs question, or your response related to connecting the new socket to the supply or load side of the FCU. If the latter (which I think is what the OP had intended) then your "as long as the FCU is not a spur from the ring" will nearly always not be correct advice (the only real exception being if there is a very long cable run from the ring to the FCU). In any event, the tos and fros with the OP have led to the conclusion that his best option would probably be to replace the FCU with a socket, provided that it can be confirmed (which seems to be almost certainly true) that the FCU is part of a (ring or radial) sockets circuit.

There is much merit in short answers, but one does need to make sure that enough is said for both sides to fully understand each other - and, as in this case, a bit of lateral thinking/discussion can often end up with a solution somewhat different from that envisaged when the OP asked his/her initial question.

... and now back to my glass of wine :-)

Kind Regards, John

yep, you repeated my response about an hour ago..........

Now back to my glass of wine :P

I'm not sure I fully understand, but at least we're both enjoing our refreshments :-) Cheers!

If I dare to offer you one little bit of advice – always remember that this is a DIY forum and that many people who post questions have very limited knowledge. In context, one can/should not, for example, assume that they know which side of an FCU they are to connect a socket to.

Kind Regards, John

Maybe this isn't the place for you then.

We all throw in our views / opinions. Sometimes there will be a clear concensus, and that's the end of it, sometimes there will be a difference of opinions, which we will discuss / debate.

You don't get to pick and choose who replies to you.

John, I do not require your advice.

Kind regards,

Lxboy

Wow  for a guy who's been a member for less than 24 hours you sure know how to win friends and influence people, huh?
Doesn't look like this is your kind of place, after all.

I'd rate John's advice over yours all day long. Good luck with your next forum.
