I live in a detached house with a gable roof, quite high pitch. The house builders have put in several steel roof straps attached to the rafters. One of these is near to the loft access and is limiting the entry access. The strap is ~ 800mm and is embedded in the masonry of the end wall and nailed to the first two timbers of the truss. I would like to move the strap so that it is a bit further up the wall (say about 800mm) to provide clear entry access to the loft. What should my approach to this problem be? Do I need to get a builder to do it and what is likely to be involved? Will the new strap have to be embedded in the masonry in some way or could it be screwed into the breeze block using a right-angle strap? Any suggestions out there?

Sounds like a lateral restraint strap on the gable end. These are spaced at 2m (max) centres and must be fixed across 3 rafters.

There is no problem with moving it but you must hook the bent part over the masonry as opposed to simply fixing it to the front of the wall.

You may also need to fit a second strap if by moving the offending one causes a large part of the gable masonry to be unrestrained.

make sure you get it right if you attempt this yourself otherwise your roof could fly off on a windy night or fall to oneside

I was under the impression that the gable end restraint straps were to give some stability to the gable end, not to prevent the roof from lifting.
I thought the wallplate restraint straps were for that purpose.

Yes, hence why hip end roofs dont have that type of strap? only wall straps.

As for moving one strap and the potential of the roof flying off...that is a bit extreme!

The over rating and additional factors will cover that one strap move.
