Trying to decide on a mower.
The two options i was looking at were the Hayter R48 and Honda HRS536SD
Similar price, any thoughts on the better one.

Honda no question. I have 2 honda pro's and they are top notch. the old hayters were great but newer ones have proved a little less reliable.

Also they are hopeless in the wet but that's not an issue as it sound like its for mulching verges etc.

The side dischage is a good feature for very long grass.

Yes it is the side exit that makes me tend towards the Honda. Think i,ll go with that. Cheers

If you don't mind me asking Is it just for a garden or specialist use? that honda is quite niche?

For a garden, but quite a big one. Just after a quality mower that is fairly light weight and ideally with side discharge and mulching, Not interested in the DIY shop offerings such as partner ETC.

They are very good, really a commercial mulch mower but for a garden its slightly limited by the fact its mulch only.

If its a very big garden though it is probably a good bet as any other quality 21/22'' is going to be mega bucks

No mulching simply mean the grass is cut and then circulated around the blades and cut again producing a fine clipping which is simply dropped on the lawn. Therefore you can't collect with this mower i.e it will not have a grass bag/box.

Mulching in general is good but you can't do it when the grass is at all wet and it doesn't work when the grass is too long.

The side discharge is for use when cutting long grass and it just shoots it out the side leaving a trail of clippings, fine for road verges etc but not so good for a nice lawn where you will have to rake it up.

If you plan on cutting your grass only when its dry and never letting it get too long then this will be fine but its not a general purpose mower. I have a mulching mower like this one but i am a professional gardener and also have others for collection. As i said they are a specialist machine really and are more suited to being part of a fleet of mowers than as your only one.

Thank you.
This is my position.
After spending the last year building and renovating i am now out doors on the garden. The grass area has been let go so is a bit wild although not over grown. The ground is not flat and like a bowling green. I intend on cutting it regular then adding top soil over this year gradually levelling it rather than rotovating it all.
Its not that bad just not a show lawn so i,m not worried about stripes and all that jazz.
If you think this Honda is maybe not best suited, can you suggest another that might be. A mulching facility would be good as it will do the garden good i feel.
With mulching, can the grass be cut ( side discharge) then mowed again mulching, basically mulching the cut grass?

Someone mentioned a Garden Care 21"
self propelled with grass collection, Mulching and side discharge options, although i have never heard of this make but this looks like the one they mentioned

The more i look the more i see. Maybe the HUSQVARNA R 53SV 3 in 1 would be better suited. Think they are a respected make

Mulching a standard lawn cut ie dry weather and normal growth will produce such a fine clipping that you will barely be able to see it.

Side discharge is a seperate feature which is useful when cutting overgrown or very long grass because rather than trying to throw it out the back it simply flies out the sides the same direction as the blades are sending it. A normal mower will use a different shape of blade to lift and throw the grass into the bag.

The side discharge is simply an extra feature which you don't need.

You are right to think that mulching will dramatically help improve your patchy lawn and as long as you are regular the mower will work out good for you. But we all get busy or go away for 2 weeks etc and it is only these few occasions where you will have the wrong machine.

As i said before any other mower as well made and durable at that width will be 700 quid plus.

I just wanted to make you aware of the limitations and i general i think your idea is good. In practise though a decent make like that husky will be more than ample for domestic use. In fact it is probably what i would have mentioned or one of the honda izys which are really good but i don't think any of them mulch.

Personally i would steer clear of garden care. They are chinese copies of old echo tools i think.
