We want to install a woodburning stove in our fireplace, we have an opening of 575 high 690 wide and 400 deep, it is all surrounded by brickwork, nothing combustible nearby, and a 1960s traditional chimney
Can anyone explain what the basic regs are ,Re-: spaces all around etc, and recommend one that fits, regards dave

Doesn't sound very high.... Are you sure there's not a builders opening behind there that you can knock out to you to give you a more suitable fireplace?

You can DIY but you need to know the Building Regs (which changed in October), submit a Building Notice & pay a fee. Your LABC will inspect &, assuming everything is OK, issue a compliance certificate; the BI may want to witness smoke & spillage tests.

Lots of archive threads on this, & other things you have to watch out for, here a few links for you to read not all may be relevant:

& some more sobering just in case you think it’s all a load of old tosh:

Also get at least 3 quotes from local independent HETAS installers:

Your better off using an independent HETAS registered installer IMO & might be pleasantly surprised. You should ask yourself if you really want all the hassle & risk getting it wrong; climbing onto the roof with an 8M stainless steel snake on your back is not for the feint hearted!

Come back if you have more questions.
