To get back to the topic, it looks like there is an earth coming in from outside through the architrave. Looks like TT. Ask the DNO to fit PME if possible, and ditch the global RCD & old Wylex (does look like nicotine stains!) in flavour of a split board or 100A incomer board with RCBO's.

Another point with the ELCB's - You often see them used as part of an off-peak install, with one pole used for the peak live and the other for off-peak live.

Remember, it doesn't look for an out of balance between the two - it is monitoring voltage on the earth wire.

thanks for all the replies
I do intend to update it
the dno are replacing the meter in about two weeks
i was just wondering what the black box next to the CU was?
Also how much of rewiring can be done DIY and how much is definately a no no

Thats the DNO fuse, looks quite old, these days you'd have a concentric service cable and there would be a 'service head' on the end that terminates the service and holds the fuse.

I'd be a good idea to ask the DNO if its due for upgrade, whether they'll let you have a TNC-S earthing terminal and can they fit an isolator, note that however that you'll you'll not get the meter guy to do it, he's probably not from the DNO, and even if he was, hes been timetabled for the time it takes to do a meter...

As much as you're competant to do, its notifiable to your local LABC though, have a chat with them, post back here with what they say (they all handle it in different ways, and some of them prefer to try and fob you off) Unless you're super competant though, and have the test gear, you'll have to get a spark in to some extent
