Woke up this morning and discovered that the multi-point leverl lock on the fron door had broken. Then had to take it apart to get out. Insurance policy has covered us to secure the property, but they won't pay for anything else as it's down to wear and tear.

The guy who has secured the property for us reckons we're looking at around £500 for someone to replace the lock. But, he said if we do it ourselves it might cost me £100. He was struggling to find out exactly what the lock is but on it is 'Yale 7026 04'

We live in tyne & wear and he reckons the only place that sells stuff like this across the whole north of england and scotland is a place in Middlesbrough, and they're closed!

Please help, don't really know what to do here

£500 - sounds like he didn't want the job. Replacing a MPT mechanism should cost £150-£200 max, and thats for labour and materials, and assuming most expensive mechanism.

Only problem with the ERA, is that you'll probably need to change the keep positions on the frame, and this can look unsightly if you've hooks/bolts. I've also heard they suffer from reliability issues - can't comment myself though, as I prefer to replace with the same make/model.

There are a few on-line suppliers that should have a like-for-like replacement, but you'll need to wait a couple of days for them to arrive. Google multipoint locks and take a look.
