I'm after a nail gun suitable for pinning dado rails and mdf paneling strips. What type is suitable for smaller pins rather than big nails?

Your looking at £500 for something powerful enough to drive a nail into plaster.
18 gauge electric nailer will pin wood to wood or plasterboard and much cheaper.
I use a few blobs of polymer for the grab with bands of foam on dado rail
Mix of both on panels..

18g will be fine. The good thing with these brads is that they bend easily when they go into the plaster, so give a more secure fitting than a straight [thicker] brad. Add some adhesive though

I have often used my 18g pin gun to fire nails into dado rails on Victorian plastered walls. I stress victorian because the plaster is really thick and I don't need to worry about hitting brick. I am only using the pins to hold the dado rail in place until the adhesive sets. If there are substantial bows in the wall, I need to use screws and plugs to pull the dado in. If you use red (6mm) plugs, you can drill through the dado and tap the plug through the timber and into the plaster/brick.
