I need to part off the rear of one room in my house to create a corridor into the extension. Space is at a premium here in order to fit a decent width door in and not loose too much off the size of the room.
So are there any other options than the standard 4" studwork with two sheets of plasterboard? Could I get away with say a 2" stud, but having much closer centres?
Noise insulation isnt really a problem, as it will be from the office/box room into the hallway.

Thanks

no problem whatsoever with 2"x 2" studs other than you will be hard pushed to find some straight ones!

you may also need to rip a standard casing down. alternatively fix a 3"x 1" lining with stops.

screw everything don't use nails. you may be wise to pilot the stud fixings prior to screwing.

Don't use 2x2 studs, instead get some 67mm CLS and use it 'sideways' giving 38mm thickness - these will be staighter than 2x2 too

Thanks for this info, but what do you mean by ripping down a standard casing?

67mm CLS ? that mean its planed or something?

Thanks

Ah brilliant, thanks for that, knocked a bit more of the old stuff down tonight, bit more to go then I can start to build the new stud wall.
Just need to decide where abouts to put the door.

Thanks for this info, but what do you mean by ripping down a standard casing?

the smallest door casing you can buy off the shelf is 4-1/4" or 108mm. you will require a casing much narrower.

in this instance it may be wise to purchase some planed timber to suit the wall thickness then add door stops.

3"x 1" planed will be the nearest.

Just one more question, how far apart should i put the studs? match them to the width of a plasterboard sheet and then have one stud at each side with on ein the middle?

Thanks
