Need to build shelf for countertop basin - advice please

Hi guys,

I have a very narrow cloakroom at one end of which I am installing a countertop basin.
The width of the room is 840mm and the end I am putting the sink in has a depth of 300mm from the back wall to the door frame.
so...
I need a shelf of those dimensions, into which I will obviously have to cut out a hole for the sink waste and a hole for the countertop mixer tap.

My questions:
What would the best material be for the shelf - and thickness
(was thinking of cutting some timberboard to sizem but wasn't sure if that could potentially warp etc.)
If its not mainstream material/sizes, where is the best place to get it from?
What bracketery would be the least intrusive?

The walls will be tiled in 'tumbled' travertine.
Any suggestions or advice would be very much appreciated.

Timberboard is a bit on the thin side. I would see if you can get an offcut of either laminate or solid timber worktop. Depending on your budget you could also get a bit of limestone or marble cut to suit.

If the shelf is going across the 840mm from wall to wall then simple 25x25 batten screwed to the 3 walls and then screw up through this into the top. If the tiles habe not been fitted yet then use some small angle brackets on teh three walls and tile over the part thats on the wall.
