I have a Neff U1422N0GB/02 oven, and when trying to use the grill, the RCD keeps tripping

The top oven was used with the oven function over Christmas (we rarely use the top oven as an oven, just as a grill), and the problem has occurred ever since then.

Have done the following troubleshooting:

- the main oven continues to work fine
- the top oven works fine using the oven function
- only when the grill is selected, the RCD trips after a few minutes when the element starts to get up to temperature. It does start to get hot, but that's when it fails, the light goes off and the RCD trips

I tried putting the top oven on for 30 mins or so in case it was a matter of 'burning off' anything that might be stuck on the element, but that didn't help.

Any ideas please of things I could try to resolve? Seems strange this started happening since we used the top section as an oven over Christmas!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Maybe it was a fault occurring with the element that the oven has helped along?

Likely, the grill element, beginning to fail. They are not expensive, nor too difficult to source and replace.

Hi...I have exactly the same problem as Andy Thomas above...replaced the element yesterday...top oven still works fine but the grill is still tripping my RCD. Admittedly it stays on longer before tripping. Thermostat maybe ??? Any ideas would be welcome.

Always most likely - the actual element. The easy way to confirm it - disconnect the element, at both ends, insulate the wire ends, then turn it on. Obviously the element will not come on, but if the expected trip doesn't happen - it must be the element.

Modern element comprise a sealed metal tube, with the element running down the middle, insulated with aluminium oxide powder. The latter is very absorbent of moisture, which then makes it conductive. Any breach in the tube, of the element casing, allows moisture in, which then causes the RCD to trip. Sometimes you can see a burnt spot on the element, sometimes not..

Thanks for your reply...as a follow on...the top grill tripped RCD within a couple of minutes...reset the RCD and the grill took about 5 minutes to trip...once reset again the grill has stayed on for about an hour with no RCD trip....very confusing...any ideas?

Using the element, can drive the moisture out, so the inclination to trip will vary.

Again thanks for your reply...I think I'm going to run it for a few days just to see if and how many times it trips my RCD. I bought the element about 6 months ago to change but didn't get round to doing it and so has been stored in garage. Hopefully using it will dry out any moisture present resulting the tripping being a thing of the past.

Thank so more for explaining the potential reason as to what might have been the issue.
