Nest, Hive etc etc

As Mahatma Ghandi used to say, you can always trust some anonymous random on the interweb.

Wouldn't that be the case for any advice given on this forum whatsoever? If one could be liable for injuries, wouldn't there be liability for damage to components or surrounds if someone followed some questionable/unclear advice?

But the fact posts can be edited (more importantly by moderators etc..) should mean that anyone can simply argue their post was tampered with. Or the opposite that the numpty DIYer could claim that they received bad advice and someone changed the post afterwards or removed it etc.... I would like to see if there has ever been a successful case against someone on a forum for advice given which led to some problem. Also would any disclaimer on a signature be legally binding to omit liability? Could DIYNOT be liable for allowing such advice to be given?

Maybe a sensible warning but in reality I am not convinced, I also agree that it shouldn't be just singled out to the heating controls (although there is a hell of a lot of them lately). Also this site has no way to verify posters (except for CC users) so putting a claim against some anonymous person (assuming VPN, no personal info given/identifiable etc...) would be rather difficult.

Where our society in general is full of 'ambulance chaser' Lawyers, I'd be very careful!!
There's a court case pending & I'd wouldn't let anyone, particularly Mods on here - tell you it's OK.
The Mods clearly have their arze covered!!

Not yet!!!

Well in a manner of speaking it was, and so was I.... At the same time. Was rather amusing as it happens.

Not for giving dangerous advice though, more speaking the truth. Same twart he tried it on with a couple of other people of the same opinion as I, and those that reached me in time all one their case.

I'm aware of at least 3 forums where the site owners and members have had problems with posted advice.
There were a couple of motoring law sites, where people worked out their story on line to dodge speeding tickets only to find plod and the cps had read their threads and leveraged it.
Any site that collects ad revenue has a problem if it openly allows people to link to places where people can download ripped IP.
But the common one is people posting "told my insurance I paid £2k for my stolen xyz, and it only cost me £100 and they paid out"

That's why I never give wiring advice or DIY gas advice here.

The main problem with wiring is that it is so easy for a DIYer to accidentally connect 230v to a low voltage expensive control like a Nest etc. and blow it up.

Electrocution is rarely fatal at 230v, but it can be.
