As per title.

Background:

Machine works but does not spin. Suspected the carbon brushes and on removal, they are indeed worn down nearly to the nub.

Machine seemed to work fine in every other way so I hope this will fix it.

Genuine carbon brushes are on order, not convinced by the quality and longevity of the third party ones.

The Question!

Before replacing the carbon brushes, is it worth cleaning the commutator?

Can't see any major issues (pitting), just a layer of carbon around it as expected.

If so, what is the best thing to use?

as above or lighter fluid and leave enough time for residue to dry
you can also use metal polish or silver polish but nothing more abrasive

Thanks for the advice...

On closer inspection of the commutator I decided it was not dirty enough to warrant further cleaning. There was only a slight discolouration or cabon and slight score line in the centre where the old carbon brush had worn down to the hard metel beneath.

I decided to employ the age old "if it aint broke" methodology.

Replaced carbon brushes with new bosch ones.

It was up and running like new in no time!
