I am in the process of replacing an internal wooden door. I need to plane approx 2mm of the side of the door for it to fit. What side would be the best to plane this small amount off the lock or hinge side.
Pretty much always easier to plane off the hinge side and recut the hinge recesses (especially as the hinge screw holes will remain in the same places) I'd say - on the lock side there is a fixed relationship between the edge of the door and the centres of the holes for the handle spindles, keyholes/lock barrel bodies (Euro barrel or Chubb barrel locks), finger plates, etc. all of which make planing that side much more challenging (and a lot more work)
Many thanks JobAndKnock will definately opt for the hinge side taking into account what you say about the fixed relationship between edge of the door etc.,
