Hi, I have snapped the key to a door. I've managed to get the rest of the key out of the lock but it's a bit twisted and I don't have a spare! I have had a quote from a locksmith who said they couldn't cut a new key from the old one but can replace the lock for a couple of hundred  lol.

I'm just wondering if it is at all possible to have a new key cut from the two pieces of this snapped one? And if it is then can any key cutter do this or is it a specialised job?

Sorry for my ignorance on this but I don't really have a clue if it's even possible to cut a key from a broken one!

Thanks :)

Should be possible, key copy is done with key in a vice which is mirrored by another blank key on a grinding wheel and then cut, may take a little longer but should be possible.

give us a clue,front/back/car door???

change it for a couple of hundred.

As long as the key can be matched together any decent locksmith can duplicate it.
Even if they read the cuts and use a depth key for cutting, or use a PC driven cutting machine.
Either way your £200 is a p1ss take.

It is house door key - but I managed to find a patient key cutter who straightened the key and cut a new one - an 8yr old did this and the guy said that he'd never seen a key that badly bent as well as snapped! I am reliably informed now that it is a Europe (?) lock and very easy to change myself if I got the right size should it happen again. £200 is a bit if a p*** take when you consider that the replacement lock would cost about a tenner!!

Many thanks for your replies :)

A cheap euro cylinder is 10 quid.
Personally I value my property a bit more.

So about 60 quid for a cylinder and expect a call out of £60 ( office hours not far from office)

£120.00 + vat = £24.00 total £144.00

So £200 was a bit extortionate
