New Light Fitting - switch keeps popping circuit breaker

I have recently bought a new (metal) pedant light and removed the old ceiling rose whihc had a block which accomodated 2 red, 2 black and 2 Earth - each were paired in type. Now I have a new fitting which has a block which is free on one side with indicators for N Earth Live - the other side of the block has wires to bulb. I have tried several different permeatations and whilst I can get the light to work (usually when I turn the power back on it is lit whether the light switch is on or off!!) - but even then when I switch it off and back on the circuit breaker pops it out again.

Any help would be most appreciated

Sounds like you are connecting the mains across the switch.
Turn the power off and get a multimeter. On ohms range test between red and black on each cable individually whilst someone operates the switch. The switch wire will be the one with the near 0ohms with the switch in one state and open circuit in the other. Put a piece of red sleeving or tape on the switch black wire. Now connect both earth wires to the earth terminal, black into the N and black with red sleeve into L. Connect with another piece of terminal block both of the reds together.
Hopefully this should sort it out.

to see how it should be wired, see for reference. and unless you know which wire is the switch, youll need a multimeter

we all know it doesnt, but when someone takes a light down then the new1 doesnt work, the old light was wired the exact same....

i'd personally guess that the original poster wasn't paying attention when he took the light down.

OK solets put this simply....if I "nest" the paired colours into connector opposite the new lights wres....would this be a problem and how does the circuit break when switching on/off? (I never said I was any good at this type of thing just learning)

if you wire red-red, black-black earth-earth, you will cause a direct short when you use the switch

end light only has 2 cables
