Do I need a structural engineer to provide calculations for what size/type RSJ i would need to create a new opening to accommodate a 5foot wide opening housing French doors?

And this may sound bonkers but can brickwork be placed in front of the the RSJ so that you don't see it?

Many thanks.

at 5 foot wide a proprietary pressed steel fella (as Rich stated)will be fine.

disc. provided there are no extenuating circumstances that is.

Thanks for that.

Can I just check that a catnic lintel will be ok even if it has to support the remainder of the brickwork on the 2nd floor (well, brickwork and window).

Be aware the work your doing, both the new opening & the doors, is notifyable; you will need LABC inspection & a compliance certificate or you could have problems in the future. ;)

I am aware that it needs building control inspection for which a fee is payable - grrr!
