new shower,

hi i have just plumbed in a triton biarritz 2 electric shower, i am all ready for wiring it upto the mains.(this is the first time i have done anything like this).

a mate gave me some wire to use, its made by nkt cables,

this is what it says on the side of the cable,

is this any good for use on my shower, he has had it used on his boiler....?

i have also bought a double pole cieling switch 45 amp

if this is all i need please can you point me in the right direction on as to do the rest, or tell me what i need please..

what KW rating is your shower? (an already the cable is way too small)

you will need 10mm twin and earth, you can use the cable you mate gave you for chnging the cable on any pendant lights you have but thats it

where are you going to connect the other end to? (no not the shower end the other end)

if its a gas boiler and so long as the cable is not enclosed then yes, but it still doesnt answer the question about what are you doing with the other end of your cable

got told to just connect it to the main fuse box.(cu.?)

but thats y i came on here, because in the instalation book, it says i can use a rcd, but this can be part of the cu.?

but then futher on in the book in a seperate diagram it just takes the cable to the cu.

rcd is stronly recomended.

RCD module has a test button on it. normal MCBs dont. If your mate gave you the wire knowing it was for this purpose, i would strongly question his advice in future.

An RCD can be fitted outside the CU in its own seperate enclosure, between the CU and the shower, if there isn't one in the main CU.

I've just finished reading all of your posts.

You are not in any way even close to being ready to wire it up. You lack so much basic knowledge that you should not be attempting this.

If you want your shower connected and working soon, i.e. before you've learned a great deal more, you will need to get an electrician.

what else is needed to finish off the job, if you dont mind me asking.

You need to consider the length and the route of the cable to the shower to confirm that 10mm² will be OK, not just now, but in the future if you want to have a shower in the 10-11kW class. Factors like volt drop, installation method (i.e. is it buried, insulated, clipped to the surface, in conduit or trunking etc) grouping (is it bunched with other cables) and ambient temperature to be considered.

With a large cable like that you have to pay attention to bend radii and adequate supports on vertical runs.

Then you should do an end-to-end test of the circuit for continuity and insulation resistance.

If you are coming off the main CU you have to consider if it can take the load, and possibly reposition MCBs. If there's no RCD you will have to wire through a standalone one, or fit an RCBO if that's an option. Alternatively you may have to have a separate mini CU for the shower which would mean pulling the main fuse in order to connect to the meter tails.
