New Tent For Family Of 5: Which One And Why?

The tunnels IMO are too prone to being damaged by the wind, they tend to catch the wind and want to take off - hence pulling your pegs out.

Of all the tents damaged by wind it has been the tunnels that I have seen damaged the most.

However, if you tie a cub scout at each pole/ground point they can generally keep it down. :)

Don't talk to me about the Scouts, they teach you how to tie all the various knots, then when you try your new found skills on a Girl Guide they don't like it and chuck you out!!

Do you think I could remuster, after all we are talking 1965 and it was in Scotland, do you think I could get back in to practice my knots again??

You could offer your services as a leader, as long as you can pass a CRB check.

Just told my younger two that:

one said: "no, it'll be all cold and rainy"

the other said: "it won't work, we'll get bored and wander off"

Dome tents with the more poles n guys the better. Good heavy groundsheet if not carrying as those nylon jobs eventually get damp. If camping in Scotland make sure vents have fine mesh covering then. Not the larger mesh you get for mosquitoes but fine so tiny midge don't invade and make it unbearable.

I don't have a family tent at the moment but my biggest is a North face expedition tent. 2 man dome with 5 poles compared to cheapo 2 pole dome tents. It's solid and I use it on top of mountains in the winter so not really relevant I suppose. The above is what I would look for.

We got the Vango Icarus 600, with an extension.

Many of our friends got the same, (by coincidence).

All pleased with them. You get more room in a tunnel tent than a dome.

Best advice I can give is shop around in actual shops to look at quality of the tents. You can't tell on line.

Thanks. We have a Go Outdoors card & I've been looking online, but there's a branch nearby, so we can have a proper butcher's in the flesh. Mind you, they don't have a 600, only a 500.
