Newel post replacment

Hi, I'm going to have to replace the base newel post on my staircase. It appears to secured somewhere beneath the top landing floorboard. Typically, how are these secured ?.Are they bolted to the joists (beneath the floor board)somehow?.

Any thoughts appreciated
